What is a Linux Man Page?

:newbie: Hi I don't know if this is the proper way to ask a question? What is a Linux Man Page? I already searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Also what is RSS feed and Icq? These two I didn't look for but since I'm here I thought I'd ask? Thank you,Saquear!

Padma 01-17-2005 07:16 PM

A "man page" is short for "manual page", i.e., a page from a User's Manual. They are the primary "official" documentation of unix. SInce Linux is obviously a unix work-alike, it inherited man pages, too. ;) What they actually are are (usually) short descriptions of commands, including their options, and syntax. If you have manpages installed, type "man man" for more information on using them. :)

RSS: I should know, but I am not familiar enough to give a good explanation. I just know that it is a news-feed protocol.

ICQ: an internet chat protocol. similar to MSN, AIM, and YM, I believe it predates them.

Back in the Elder Days there where actually large comb-bound manuals containing printed pages that looked quite a bit like the on-screen man pages we use today.
I work at a public library and we had a copy of Bell Laboratories "Unix System User's Manual - Release 5" donated to us last summer. Since it was of no use to the library, I took it home and use it as a conversation piece on my desk. It's sitting next to me as I type this... Ah, nostalgia... ;)

I think the "Really Simple Syndication" is the one you want ;) I heard RSS stood for something else at first, but turned into the above.

It's actually quite cool. For example, in Firefox, I have a button at the bottom of a website that sends an RSS feed. If I click the button (looks like a mini satellite) it puts that website in my bookmarks, in a folder like fashion. Then, no matter what page I'm on, I can browse the latest LQ threads (using LQ as the example ;) ) by dropping down my bookmarks and entering the folder for LQ.

Cool

From :newbie: Is that Russian or Armienan? It still looks good, please do not under rate yourself!!!:tisk:

kornerr 01-19-2005 11:34 AM

My site is bulls**t. Really. It's Russian, Cyrillic windows-1251 encoding... cuz all Windows Russian users have its encoding. And to spread Linux for such win-users, I should use windows-1251 encoding.

Saquear 01-19-2005 12:30 PM

From:newbie: Siberia.Wow thats got to be cold. What do you do for work up there in the cold? What is the difference between Russian and Cyrilliac? How come all Russians have Windows encoding? To spread Linux all you need is your site. It looks very nice, you need your site, a little ingenuity, and goodwill towards your fellow man. This is only an opinion but you have everything it takes, well maybe allite bit of confidenece, or maybe a whole lot but to do what you've done is a step in the right direction!!!:)

kornerr 01-20-2005 09:35 AM

Thats not so cold as people think, especially this winter. The most cold temperature was about -30C, but for 2 days only. Now is about -5C. And summer is coming... (My own summer (Shove it, shove it!) - from Deftones). Cool song. And Cyrillic, without letter a. Theres no actualy Russian encoding, only cyrillic. Well, I can only say that there were TWO men - Cyrill and Mefodii - who invented first (not Russain, it was MANY-MANY years ago) Cyrillic alphabet.

This thread seems to become a chat:)

Saquear 01-20-2005 10:52 AM

From :newbie: Whats a chat?
You mean there's no Russian alphabeth? When was it invented? What lanuage did they speak and what kind of lettering did they use before? Deftones, heard of them, don't listen to music so I don't know the songs!
The coldest it gets here is about +35!!! And thats C-oooo-llld!!!! Well thanks for the advice on the computer I'm a litte slow keep up the work on your web site,Saquear!!!

kornerr 01-20-2005 11:02 AM

Mmm... Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and other Slavic alphbets came out from cyrillic alphabet. As I just watched in google they were from Grees, town Soluny. I didnt find a date, but they learned Slavic and... you can read it yourself, just find it in google.:) Whats a chat? Chat between us :)
____
I found a date: about 850 year. Quite long ago:)

Well Cyrill and Mefodii were 2 byzantine missioneries (saints for the orthodox church) from thessaloniki , the second largest city of greece, who were sent in the balkans to make the slavic nations Cristian's, in 863 i think.
Cyrill invented an alphabet based on the greek and the latin alphabet that would suit to the language those people spoke.
Most slavic nations(east europe), use the cyrillic alphabet and are orthodox cristians.
Serbia,bulgary,Russia,Ucrania,

What about "Nirvana"? "System of a down", "Smashing pumpkins", "Sevendust", "Sepultura", "Soulfly", "Marilyn Manson"???

perfect_circle 01-21-2005 02:12 PM

well, tool is the best band ever played music on this planet. I like dillinger, I grew up listening to grunge (nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, alice in chains, screaming trees, mudhoney.....), system of a down is fine, sepultura also, but since this is a linux forum and not a chat-room, and this is posted on linux-general, not even on general, why don't you send me an mail. It's not right to use this forum/thread for this kind of discussions

kornerr 01-22-2005 09:15 AM

Oh, please, don't teach me :)
