Question from this side of the pond: what the hell is this rootbeer that you all seem to drink over there?
I'm told that the flavor recognized as root beer in the US is commonly used for toothpaste on your side of the pond. That will probably make it impossible for you to enjoy drinking root beer.
We don't all drink it. I liked it as a child. Now I may have a bottle of root beer every year or so.
Original American rootbeer comes from the sassafras tree root. We used to dig up the sassafras root and wash it then chew on it. Great taste! If you like root beer then try some from a home brewer.
Used to dig it up and boil the root for tea, loved that stuff. I don't do that any more since I found out about the possible liver damage and that it's considered a carcinogen (it's the Safrole in it) by the US and EU (but what isn't ?).
Still like Root Beer (Barqs diet for me) and https://www.sassafrastea.com/
Don't really drink much of either any more though.

I am curious about that research for a possible carcinogenic. It's like the testing on mice to check for possible carcinogen of a particular material. If repeat application of anything may cause issues.
I haven't dug any up for a long time. We don't find much sassafras in Central Illinois. Southern Illinois has it everywhere!

Not sure if it was any worse, probably less, than being in a moderately cigarette smoke filled room, was more worried about the liver damage. Still all things considered probably safer than a lot of stuff (artificial sweeteners come to mind) if drank in moderation.
Found it when we went camping in southern Indiana (Harrison Crawford State Forest). Wrapped it in cloth and boiled in in a old 2(?) gallon coffee pot, I can almost taste it now
