What good is Telnet in Linux?

Back in the 90s, I mostly used Telnet for playing MUDs. I keep noticing, however, that some Linux users find other uses for Telnet. So, what are the major uses for Telnet inside of Linux? I don't see why it's considered important. Isn't bash and the terminal good enough?

You can read about Telnet and how it is used in Linux/Unix today on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telnet

for most of us, it is useless and dangerous to use.
