what fdisk

isnt it kinda ironic that slackware uses fdisk for partitioning hard drives. i dont know maybe its just me but linux is supose to be microsoft free right. redhat has its own partition manager what ever its called. fips is one of the two but im not sure what the gui one is called.

just thinking thats all.

linux fdisk and dos fdisk are two totally different apps, as is my understanding. Besides, dos fdisk has been around a lot longer than Microsoft.

Yea, Linux's fdisk isn't crippled and buggy like DOS's fdisk is.

Redhat includes "fdisk" too BTW.

Fips is a little FAT filesystem resizer written for DOS.

You might try actually installing and learning out these things before complaining about them!

I prefer to use the menu-version called cfdisk that is included in Gentoo, Debian and probably some other distros.

Yea, cfdisk does seem to be the standard partioning program that is used on most mainstream Linux distros. It is a lot friendlier than any "fdisk" I've seen.

My appologies to illtbagu, please continue to learn about all this stuff: It's fun & rewarding!

Thanks, and peace to you as well. I'm not normally like that, but I guess I was just feel a little belligerent that night.

Actually once you get used to the power of the GNU/Linux "fdisk" you'll really laugh at the old MSDOS one. It has a lot of cool options that can be used to fix up messed up MBR's or to do other strange tricks with it. cfdisk is a semi-graphical creature that is not as user friendly as Win2k/XP storage manager. It works well, but is often a target of a lot of journalist's criticisms that feel that installing Linux is still kind of intimidating.
