what exactly is happening when I hit ^!<F2>
I am very familiar with Linux/GNU and have limited (but growing) understanding of Linux OS.

Basically, my question is this: what process is receiving the Ctrl+Alt+F2 keystroke and what are tty's, ttyS's, pty's, ttya*'s, ...,, and what is actually happening when I switch to a different terminal? Maybe all I'm looking for is a precise dataflow of what's happening under the hood.
You can assume I am not running an X server.

I realize this may be a lot, so I might just be given more links to research from, but I've been trying to figure this out on my own and have not been succeeding very well.

Also, I'm not afraid of people being too technical (especially since I can just ask for clarification here)

Thanks very much in advance,
