Fiber Optic....

Isn't that pretty much what we are using for dsl and cable now?

There is an interface on the pole across the street from my house that I am connected to. Granted there may be some loss from there to the modem, but it is very minimal considering the length of it. I had them put in a new RG-8 cable from the interface to the modem.

i only posted this question because i was interested in seeing what there is to do on linux, i thought that there was some magic application for the os that everyone's using it for that i didn't know about. just curious. also, it seems as though people mainly use it for internet related things, "router, firewall, web server, mail server" and the like.

as for the internet babble in the original question i was just saying that i do not currently have internet access while running linux, my isp doesn't support it. but ill be getting cable soon so i'll be able to use it for internet browsing at least, which is what i mainly use win2k for anyway that and age of empires.

as for davidpfillips, id be willing to wager that he's sleepin' around

anyway, thanks for the input and how is linux for writing code, im going to college to be a computer scientist, would i be able to use linux in class or would i have to use microsoft software to do what i was instructed to do. -not worded well

to me, windows is fm, linux is shortwave; windows is binoculars, linux is a telescope; windows is a boombox, linux is high end audio; windows is stouffer's, linux is julia child-linux is the opportunity to be what you can be as far as computational functionality is concerned. moreover the whole thing is of the whole of its users-a pleasing aesthetic to such a potent creation.

I use Linux for gaming, programming, email, surfing and learning something new everyday and learning how Linux works and how all of the apps that I use with it work. I'm a geek when it comes to learning new things and with Linux, you learn something new everyday.

Yep, you guessed it I stay in motels when I'm at work.

But land line dialup is much superior to a cell phone, which is all we had on the boats before.

Goat, are you sure it won't work with linux? If so, you should consider getting a local isp, instead of the one you have. Most of them are only $10 - $15.

Linux is good for other things as well, about anything you can do with windows except run some of the games. Just about everything else has a free replacement.

actually linux can be a great office computer. in my company all we use is windows. and there is allways some probles. so when needed, comes the IT guy and fixes the problem. once i told to my supervisior: hey, why won't we start using linux. he said, that linux is too hard to learn...
is it? what is the purpose of computer at my company? email, word, excel, www and that is pretty much it. plus some additional programs as well. id there were linux based OP's, there would be a much less problems. learning the gnome isn't a problem at all.
so linux can be just for veryday uses as well. don't you think?

Man, nothing to be ashamed of; I'm a smoker, I drink too much coffee, and I still like Microsuck's Age of Empires. We all have guilty pleasures.

Anyway, all my friends have gone on about how boring Linux is without a net connection. Honestly some of the most fun I've had playing with Linux comes from trying to get a wireless connection to my neighbor's apartment.

Alright, the most fun thing I've done lately without a route to world: built the house MP3 ripping station out of an old dualie PPro, and then Nfs mounted that machine to 7 others on the local LAN and had the same music coming out of 13 speakers throughout the apartment (UltraSparc's weird audio subsystem made the number odd.) What can I say, I'm easy to entertain.

Cheers,

Finegan

If you have noting better to do

If you have nothing better to do with your computer, might I humby suggest picking up some books from your local book store and learn how to program.... who knows, the skills your learn might become *very* useful soon.

Well, some people wrote they're using it for a desktop. I use Linux mainly for desktop (it's my only OS). Ok, I've got mail server, DNS, ssh, use ftp for filesharing etc, but all those services are just to make my desktop work easier.
I must say it's good there is no one application everyone uses. For me Open Source means I have a choice and I can choose which program I'd like to do something. And nearly always I have the choice.

Linux is great for coding. It does not offer sophisticated graphical programming environment (oh, well, it offers: kdevelop, for example), but you don't need them for good coding.
I don't know if Linux will be good for programming in the college you're going to. In most cases, there are standard languages, "compiler-independent", so you can use an OS you wish when programming. There are differences when you move to GUI apps, in such case Windows/Unix programmming is different. I don't know how it is in your college.

For GAVollink

Hi GAVollink, I too love flying with MSFS and I participate in translating FSSC (flight simulator scenery creator) into french. This is my only reason to keep the windows partition. However it crashes every time now with "fs2000.icd" errors. Any ideas? I'm grounded and frustrated.
