1. If you want an easy distro, go with Mandrake.
2. I believe if your referring to the package management, the only one that I can think of that uses Portage is Gentoo, since they created it.
3. Compiling depends on the system really and what you need on the system.
4. Any distro is as secure as YOU the administrator makes it.

If I was you and your server is on the lower end, and you want the Portage Tree, then go with Gentoo. You basically install what you want during the initial install of it, but its not easy as some of the other distro's out there. Your actually asking for things that no distro really has over the next.

And this also should belong in the Distro section. You might want to check out www.distrowatch.com and maybe make this decision for yourself. Your only going to get opinions asking these sorts of questions.

I was thinking FreeBSD cuz I know they had the portage tree, and I know Gentoo took ports from FreeBSD...but then, I wasn't sure FreeBSD had to compile everything, or if was just binaries... I guess i'll just chill w/freebsd. I've used Gentoo on my main system, it kicks ass and is soo much faster then mandrake on the same system, after everything is compiled. It was tight. Is FreeBSD's packaging compiled or binaried?

Taken from www.freebsd.org :

"For most ports, a precompiled package also exists, saving the user the work of having to compile anything at all"

That would be BSD who created the "BSD ports collection" and gentoo just ripped it and added it to linux with a few modifcations - And i do not care how much they protest that there PMS is different, theving scumbags go develop your own, like apt!!! (You aint getting apt btw)

You could always just stick Debian GNU/Linux on your server.. Debian is fast, secure, and it has apt a seriously cool advanced package management system.

The only reason I only mentioned Gentoo is that BSD is not a so called "distro" of Linux, its BSD, which is not Linux. You didn't specify that you were looking outside of Linux when you referred to "distro"...

But I was wrong about Gentoo creating it.. my head must have been somewhere else.

Gentoo wrote PORTAGE.

BSD made PORTS.

Two different things, with two different names.

They are different, and even written in different languages.

Though PORTAGE is currently being ported (getting confusing) to FreeBSD.
