What distibution to use for 400mhz pc
 

Ok I am wanting to install linux on an old pc for my brother who just wants it for internet browsing and emailing basically. But also so that he can download his photos off his digital camera.

It is a 400mhz processor with 152Mb Ram. It has a sis530 graphics chip and also a ambient 56k modem (also have a motorola 56k modem if it the other one is not compatible)

Any ideas on a distrubution that will work well with what I require?

Slackware is usually good for old hardware.
Edit: Yes,Slackware would work with that procesor and memory.

Slackware would be a good choice as would Arch Linux. You don't find many uber newbie-friendly distros that will run on that kind of hardware any more but if you or someone you know is a bit cluey, neither of those distros aren't too difficult to set up and once going, will be great for what it's needed for.

Take Puppy Linux for a run. Small and runs lightweight window manager. I like their package manager, Pupget. If you can click a mouse button you can install an app.

A few common ones off the top of my head:

1. Slackware - reliable and fast on anything, plus you can customize / tune the heck out of it
2. Damn Small Linux - considers 400mhz "fast", will likely fly on that hardware
3. Puppy Linux - becoming a nice and mature distro
4. Vector Linux - basically Slackware meant for old hardware, may be just what you're looking for
5. Gentoo - using binary packages (as compile times would be brutal) and a light window manager, this would be a good choice

I have a 400mhz IBM and i was able to get debian running quite well on it.

and just to throw in another option .. xubuntu

PCLINUX will be there as will ... might be a little irritating during installation coz its a live installer ..... but great for newbie ... its 1cd based and its lock and loaded with softwares
