What's your favorite DE or WM?
I love Gnome 3 and Cinnamon. I use Gnome 3 more though because the online integration is bliss. Wby?

WM: openbox all the way.
DE: what i hack. i keep thinking that i need some real tiling every now and then; wms that do both are called dynamic i think. have to look into that... Quote:

I just adore the looks and functionality of KDE 4, but am not looking forward with any enthusiasm to my future inevitable move to the ugly and, until now, buggy KDE Plasma 5. And then, in a few year's time, my move to the completely different Plasma 6... rinse and repeat...

Xfce. As a developer once said, it just does the job without being in your face or under your feet.

I can't say I have one anymore (<—check the link in my sidebar under "Distribution." ;))
I like Ratpoison a lot these days! |

KDE-4.x drove me to Xfce and it was just about 6 years before the KDE developers finally got it right with 4.13.x. I'm not looking forward to having to go through this again, but, for now, it looks like my favorite Linux distribution, Slackware64, will not be switching to KDE-5 anytime soon. When the time comes I'll probably switch back to Xfce or, perhaps, the new Lumina. While Lumina is made for the *BSDs, the creators over at PC-BSD have made it available for other platforms. |

I like Xfce4, but I always seem to have issues with it's compositing. I used KDE from the early 3.x days to the mid 4.x days. The eye candy is nice, but got old to me after a while. I prefer using Fluxbox with elements of both Xfce4 and KDE. The only part of KDE I can't seem to live without is Dolphin. I haven't found any other file manager I like as much.

I personally prefer a modular desktop environment, therefor any desktop that uses a shell is not to my personal preference. I am very fond of Kwin though, and since it works best in Kde i did use it for a long time despite that it uses the Plasma shell.
I am also not a fan of file managers managing the desktop either, such as Nautilus, and have hackd up desktop environments to avoid such complications, before. As i said, i am fond of Kwin. I still think it is an amazing window manager, but recently i left its OS X like luxurious effects in place of Xmonads tiling capabilities. Kwin can tile too, but it's not the same. Until you try it, you will never understand it. I have grown to love Xmonad, but i doubt i could use it exclusively. I have tried it in three Desktop environments. In Lxde, the panel crashes randomly. In Xfce, there is issues with the task manager, and Mate is perfect. (In my personal environment i have zypper removed Caja and replaced it with Thuna, FYI, but that shouldn't influence Xmonad's behavior). I am in the middle of testing it with LXQT, but have had little to do with that project currently. Gnome Shell does look the best of all in my opinion though. I wish i could get my hybrid environment looking so slick. |
