What's with "/usr/local"
Hello all,
historically (on our solaris network) we used to have a "/usr/local" mount point (mounted to a directory on our network appliance server) on which we store all our programs/data common to all our workstations. Since we have a lot of scripts referring to this location I now want to have this same entry on our linux machines. Problem is that I already have a /usr/local on these systems and when I put this aside and replace it with a link to the centrally (netapp) managed directory things start to break up, even though the contents of this mounted entry for now are exact the same as what was in the original /usr/local (I started with a copy of this tree). If I put aside the original /usr/local using "mv /usr/local /usr/local.org" and after that make a link in /usr as follows:
cd /usr
ln -s /dapps/local_lnx local
("/dapps/local_lnx" is mounted to a directory on our netapp server)
Our tcsh environment all of a sudden can't find any command anymore ("ls", "pwd", ...) so it looks like the path setting is screwed. I wonder why?
Is there anything special about this /usr/local tree I should now of?
any advise would be welcome.
Thx,
Jan.
