what's the most ideal FTP server for.....?
What server software should I use if:
1.I want both anonymous and user logins
2.VERY low traffic
3.want very secure system
4.to run on linux or bsd systems
5. simple to setup and maintain
Why is ncftpd only availble in binary? Should I use ncftpd, proftpd, vsftpd, etc??

pureftp or proftp
vsftp is OK too,
One man's meat is another man's poison. Just completely avoid wuftp.

vsftpd is very easy to set up and doesn't need much when it comes to resources. It is also very common so it would be easy to get help if you would need it. I also agree on staying away from wuftpd.

If I installed wuftpd it wouldn't be my server any more .
Is there a way to limit simultaneous connections in vsftpd? And what should the server's software firewall rules look like? Just destination 21 tcp? Do I need port 20 stuff?

Sorry to ask the same question again but I just downloaded ProFTPd and will be (well maybe) configure a system tomorrow to exactly as stated in the beginning of this thread but now I have my doubts, is there a huge difference, I am vrand new to Linux so trust me this is a huge challenge for me to get a simple yet secure FTP server going all on my own (Sort of.....have you guys/girls)
Any suggestions?

just do a locate on proftp and find the config file
it may be in /usr/lib/proftpd.conf or maybe in /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf It varies from system to system.
It is heavily commented and will walk you thru everything.
