Question What's newest (best) distro I can put on 486 laptop?

Hello all. . . can't seem to get any good info on this - what's the best distro of Linux to put on my old 486 laptop? (I know it's not going to be fast, this is just a project).
It's 75MHz, has 16MB Ram, but only 327MB Hard Drive.

Thanks for any info!

Jed

Wink Which ver. # of slackware?

Thanks, Hanzerik.
Wondered which version you were meaning - I mean just go to slack.org and get the latest version, or an older distro number? Just curious,
thanks,
Jed

I'd say Debian, its ideal for light weight systems. Any of the current versions will do.

Potato 2.2 - Stable
Woody 3.0 - Testing (due to become stable sometime next month)
Sid - Unstable

I'm using slackware 8 on a machine with a 2g harddrive, I did a base install of about 150meg, then had to add the development tools to compile some programs and kernel source. Now I'm sitting right around 450meg. No X windows components, I use it for a samba and WWW server. I added another harddrive for samba to use as shares.
Never used Debian, but heard it does good on older computers as well. Stay away from the newer versions of redhat and mandy, They will take up alot of space on your small harddrive. I installed RH6.2 on a 400meg drive as a samba server with a 3gig drive as the share.

The older the Version the smaller the install, is my experience.
