weird mozilla freeze when clicking certain link

i'm trying to read this article on linuxtoday.com:

http://linuxtoday.com/developer/2004050800326OPCY

but my mozilla seems to freeze whenever i hit the "Complete Story" link...

it's like the page starts to load, and then mozilla just hangs... "top" then shows mozilla-bin as using 99% of the cpu and stuff... i'm forced to do a "kill" on it... then i open it again, and i'm able to browse around the web and all, but when i hit that specific "Complete Story" link it hangs again... seems i can hit any of the other "Complete Story" links on linuxtoday.com without a problem...

is this happening to anyone else??? or do you have any idea why it's happening to me???

i'm using mozilla 1.4 on slackware 9.1...

any help would be greatly appreciated...

i'm running the same setup as you, mozilla 1.4, slack 9.1. the link loads fine for me, however, i noticed there was some flash on the page. do you have the flash pluggin, just a guess?
good luck.

thanks for your input, peacedog...

i'm using the /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins/libflashplayer.so that came with slackware...

i guess now would be a good moment for me to upgrade to the latest flash plugin...

=)

i deleted libflashplayer.so to see if mozilla would work (as in not hang) without the plugin, but it still hangs...

i'm gonna try with the new plugin...

argh!!! this sucks...

=)

EDIT: if it hangs even without the flash plugin, does that mean the problem isn't the plugin???

sorry, to be no more help, that's the only thing i can come up with, since it works here. hope the updated flashpluggin works. if it turns out your still having problems, and you need to read the article, i'll copy it to a text file and send it to you, till you get things sorted.
good luck.

are you (peacedog) using the plugin that came with slackware or did you download it from macromedia???

Peacedog 05-08-2004 04:54 PM

my pluggin version

Shockwave Flash 6.0 r79

most likely, it was a guess on my part about the pluggin.

okay i'm ready to install the new flash plugin but the readme says:

Quote:

Device fonts require outline fonts to be installed. This is a change from Flash Player 5 for Linux. Some fonts to install: ttfonts, urw-fonts...
where can i get those???

~$ ls /var/log/packages/ | grep fonts

gnu-gs-fonts-6.0-noarch-1
xfree86-fonts-100dpi-4.3.0-noarch-2
xfree86-fonts-cyrillic-4.3.0-noarch-2
xfree86-fonts-misc-4.3.0-noarch-2
xfree86-fonts-scale-4.3.0-noarch-2

as best i remember the program installs what it needs, other than that here is a forum search for ttfonts

okay i haven't yet installed the new flash plugin cuz i still haven't figured-out where to get those fonts, but i'm working on it... thanks for the link...

as for the mozilla problem, i did a couple tests... to determine if this was a user-level configuration issue, i created a new user account and clicked the link with the new account's mozilla... mozilla flipped just as on my account, cpu usage 99%, etc...

so then i wanted to test if it had something to do with my kde, so i logged-into my account using blackbox, went to the link, etc... it didn't hang...

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
