Weird Installation problem
Morning everyone.
Well, I wont beat around the bush, i'll get right to it. I decided to wipe my Linux box and start with a fresh install. I'm installing RH 7.2 for the moment. First time I installed RH 7.2, it installed no problems. However, since i've tried reinstalling, i've had major problems. Here is what happens: I walk through the setup process no problem. I create my partitions, pick my packages to install, create password, setup network etc. What happens is when it actually starts to install the packages. It looks like it is installing fine (Progress meter is about 80% done, packages are being installed) and then all of the sudden, it aborts the installation. It goes to a shutdown screen where it tells me its aborting the install, opens the CD-ROM drive and tells me it is ok to reboot my computer. This particular episode has happened numerous times and I cant seem to get it installed. I'm not sure what the problem is, but here is what thing I think it may be. This particular computer im installing on is setup through a KVM switch (Belkin to be specific). I'm not sure if it could be a problem due to the fact it's connected to a KVM, but im not sure. Anyone have ideas? Possible hardware problem of some sort? Thanks for your help. Hope someone has an idea on what the heck is going on. :) Tarballed |
Try to eliminate obvious problems:
md5sum on each of your install CDs remove the KVM switch and connect your hardware components directly ensure that your CD drive is not failing (that had me going around and around once) |
Ya, it's very weird thing occuring. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, especially since I was able to install the first time around with no problem.
I'm going to do what you suggest. Basically, connect the box directly to the monitor, keyboard and mouse and check the CD-ROMS. I'm also going to check out all the connections inside the box, make sure they are all set correctly. If that does not work, I'm going to try swapping out the Hard drive. If that does not work, I dunno...any thoughts? Tarballed |
Back everyone
The more I think about this, the more I think it may be bad CD's. Let me explain. First there is the problem with the installation aborting randomly during the install. Second, X-Windows not getting installed properly and getting a ton of errors when trying to load startx. If it is not the CD-ROM, possibly the hard drive? THoughts? Tarballed |
monitor the logs in the Virtual Consoles:
CTRL+ALT+F3 CTRL+ALT+F4 sticking to the consoles during the package installation process should give you something that is causing the install failure. |
