Watching/Monitoring a device

I am running VMWare of Windows 2000 ontop of Linux, the CD drive in VMWare is /dev/cdrom. I need to be able to see what part of the disk it is reading and also what data it reads. Is there any way I can do either? If not, then what can I do to get more information about what VMWare is reading off a disk?

Quick responses are greatly appreciated.
