I am wondering what is the best way to get rid off all the drivers and dev stuff that I do not need? I am a little wary of deleting these.

the total size of a generously compiled kernel (i.e. the drivers you are presumably talking about) take up around 30mb max on average. and half of them are required. "dev stuff" does not actually exist, they are not real files, and so take up no space at all. if you want to reclaim some space, uninstall pacakges you don't want, like kde....

quick question on your last note about kde. what WM do you recomend I have the default suse loads. Is Gnome better? whatr about twr what exactly are the pluses on using these on a machine that is a desktop?

I like Window Maker. A lot.

There aren't really pluses and minuses, it's just a matter of personal preference. Some claim that KDE might be slower, but I think it's probably fine on a reasonable fast system.

I have tried gnome and window maker but I don't know how to make winex shortcuts. that killed it for me. Gnome didn't work well with winex so that killed that. I likes the games. Well thanx for all the help.

blackbox for ever. you don't need desktop icons etc.. you've just not tried living without them....

so you do everythign from command prompt? Do you use a lot of aliases? why no shortcuts?

Nope ... you do it from a pop-up menu that shows up wherever you right-click the desktop :)
The menu is maintained as an easy to use ASCII-file.

If you use gkrellm, there's a plugin to launch apps. No more desktop icons, just a nice plugin at the bottom of gkrellm to launch apps :)

But why would you not want the icons and what not? Does kde or whatever else window manager in use take up so much processing power that you are unable to effectivily run your applications? Or is it just that you choose not to? I had tried windowmaker and it's pretty cool. I just don't see why you would use it. It was fun to tinker with though. Can someone show me some screen shots of thiers. I would like to see how others use it. I am going to try and go with no shortcuts and see what happens.

why not? because you jsut don't need them, they take up space, clutter the desktop up, waste processing power...

I started using blackbox when i had to buy a cheap and cheerful computer to use at university, and found gnome was so so slow, so i tried blackbox, which i didn't understand (the desire to use it, not how to use it) at all at the time, but within a couple of weeks i was so hooked. loads in a second, and as i started usign consoles more desktop icons and start buttons seemed to utterly pointless and restrictive.

as for screenshots, you should have a flick through the existing screenshot thread, that's damn long now, and full of lots of different images from differing managers

I actually use Gnome 2 on one of my desktops, with nautilus disabled and no icons on desktop. Other Window Managers I use is sometimes Enlightenment, which some say is a hog of its own but was very fast on my 400mhz and I sometimes use XFce, which is sort of a CDE clone from Solaris.
The only shortcuts I tend to make are on my one panel in Gnome, no icons for me, they are distasteful in my own opinion.
