I just read a thread about this on the software forum.
Wine does NOT work correctly under glibc 2.3 systems. I will make this quite clear, if it works for you, you are lucky:
ANYBODY WHO UPDATES REDHAT 8 FROM NOW ON, WILL PROBABLY LOSE THE ABILITY TO RUN WINE
Redhat just issued a security updated to glibc, but unfortunately moved to glibc 2.3.x while they did it. This breaks Wine. If you upgrade to Mandrake 9.1, or Redhat 9, this will be the case also.
We know about this issue, Alexandre is working hard to address it, but it basically involves a rewrite of the threading layer. Recompiling Wine will NOT solve this problem if you encounter it, it is something that must be solved by the Wine developers.
CodeWeavers have put together an RPM for redhat that contains the security fix, but without the update to glibc 2.3.x, you can use that in the meantime.
Do not run up2date on Redhat 8, or upgrade to MDK 9.1 or Redhat 9 until you have the all clear that Wine has been ported to NPTL threading if you rely on Wine.
Good luck!
