Want to know your views on embedded Linux

Hi All,

I have not posted for long since I was far far away from Linux for all this while. I am currently attempting to build an embedded Linux image which will work as a GUI for a printer. This is a demo project that I am attempting in my company.

However, I find that lot of embedded Linux links that were active till last year has almost died off!. Below are the few links that I tried.

http://www.uclinux.org/ (Last release on July/05)
http://uclibc.org/ (Last release on Aug/05)
http://www.arm.linux.org.uk/ (Last updates was in 2005)

In addition many projects mentioned here are also inactive (Eg. FBUI, PicoGUI, Nano-X). (Thats the first site which will appear when I Google for "embedded Linux GUI".)

What is the message that I should get from these?

a) If you are doing embedded Linux you are of your own
b) Do more googling
c) Embedded Linux died.

I am trying to convince my managers that it is more easier to do development in embedded Linux; now I want someone to convince me that first

Please give your opinion on this and also if you know, please refer some sites which has current information. (Of course there were a very few sites that I found to be active even now link DirectFB. I also saw kernelkit today morning. I am still downloading it through my dial-up link)

Thanks & Regards,
Sarin

If you're not sure about Linux.. why are you suggesting it? Try some other OS too.. (NetBSD, for example), perhaps you'll be surprised and prefer them in Embedded Devices.

The GP2X is an embedded Linux project, and it's far from dead

(Tho I did need JTAG to keep mine that way a short while ago. . . )

Hardware matters much. Drivers and such things... When it comes to GUI, you can simply use Qtopia (earlier Qt/Embedded).
