Walmart sells Lindows machines!

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...56&sb=61&bti=0

check that out! Im thinking about getting one because im not only in need of a new machine but it'd help support the movement. Only question tho is, I remember hearing about Lindows and that news was not so good (if i can remember correctly) Are they going against GPL? Don't want to support them if they aren't playing by the rules, tho it's better then Microsoft, I think i'd just reformat with mandy or redhat anyway. ;) The details on the site say Lindows can run most windows apps???? easy to use front end for wine er did they make a deal with the devil?

500 bucks aint bad for a 1.5 with CDRw and all the other stuff listed. Excellent deal actaully. Buy your grandma one!

Isn't this software still in beta? Last I heard it wassnt even close to being ready for a widespread public release. Also where's the source code?

If I were an odds maker in Vegas id give it a 40/1 odds to fail. People just dont want something that sounds like a cheap knockoff, and is advertised (if you read the wallmart press release) as a cheap knockoff. I really hope it doesnt bring Linux down with it.

On the other hand, if they do release their source code soon I wish it the best of luck. (Although I just dont see it being a hit)

Theirs some screenshots on there homepage and um... well... they look windows 95a like. *pukes* WTF? wheres the KDE3 in this motha!? :)

I've been reading some more and it sounds like it's just a minimal gui with wine support. In the screenshots i didn't even see linux like tools and apps.

I think it'd be better then purchasing a windows-based OEM but you do bring up a very good point. It may help ms drop users BUT it may not be doing us any good.

.....

What we need is a good, hardcore geek-based OEM with some standard easy to use tools. I just bought a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 PDA this week and their interface... for there 230x320 screen would make an excellent full size desktop GUI for newbs and people that don't like using machines. (cause it's simple). I love that thing to death and it's GUI is efficient. But anyway, im trailing off.

This is a good step but i think they'd be better off with a different, more proven distro, like redhat, mandy, suse, etc.

I believe Lindows is the most laughable OS out here, I was off for a while, I heard they beat MS in court, and now they want to be another MS (100 bucks for a year subscription to what? news? I'd rather buy New York Post for a quater a day), so anyway the deal on the machines is a fair one, and if opt for getting one I'd say go ahead. As for myself I am thinking of getting another machine but I'd rather build it myself.

Tihis is very strange. Probably you have to become a lindowsinsider for 99 bucks if it is ever released to get the final version.
Just looked at the website - those lindowsguys are getting more ridiculous by the hour.
They have a click-and-run warehouse now where you can download apps like xine for free - if you are a member at the warehouse.
Now to find out how much that costs you have to sign up to become a tester for linows and pay 99.- for that for one year. Then they tell you how much it will cost you to dl free software from their warehouse. I see GPL trouble at the horizon.

Well, this is an interesting concept and I am afraid that with the right kind of publicity like the one walmart is making there is a lot of people who will be amazed at this "new" and "great" operating system which is as "stable" as Unix and as "dumb-using" as windows. Eventhough their similar approach to the annual fee as Microsoft is simillarly stupid and directed towards people's pockets, I'm afraid many people are gonna be sucked into this thing Lindows. I doubt corporations are going to adopt it at all, but many households are gonna get it. Also the biggest problem is that we only know how good it is, as pictured by them, we do not know how horrible it really is yet for it is new. But lets hang around and see what happens. Personally I aint coming near it.

http://www.carbonlinux.com sells preinstalled RH, Mandrake or SuSE. They look like decent machines for a fair price. And you get a real distro loaded. Only catch is the CDs aren't included.

<edit> Selling machines with some half baked distro just isn't a real good thing imho<</edit>

yea, Lindows has a terrible GUI and well.. it's just terrible. Very Limiting and it's not really promoting the REAL workings of GNU/Linux. I wish they were more of team players cause even tho they will make windows users take a step back from Windows, they really aren't making the users take a step forward to Linux, Just Lindows.... so basically, your left with the same thing.

I've decided not to purchase this machine and work on gathering some start-up funding to sell a few OEM machines myself to help create more options. Atleast locally. Even if it's just a summer project that helps out 2 families I know personally... Would be good expirience :)

Any Thoughts?

I don't see any GPL issues here, they want to charge for bandwidth not for the software itself, the real issue is here who's going to buy something that non-existent, some test release of some OS and espacially from the guy who ran mp3.com and jumps on everything while it is hot.

bkeating 06-17-2002 12:18 PM

They should of stuck with more rock solid distros! Mandy, Suse and Redhat would treat ya right.

crashmeister 06-21-2002 01:00 PM

A little better - selling now with MDK too.

zLinuxz 06-21-2002 09:07 PM

it was probably some dumb executive who decided to sell Lindows, lol.

i beg to differ. You have obviously not read their EULA or their FAQs - this is from the FAQ:

Quote:

Q. Can I allow my friends to have a copy of any software I obtain?

A. The Lindows.com Insider program is designed to be exclusive to the individual that signs up. As an Insider member, we ask that you not distribute copies of the LindowsOS to other individuals and that you abide by the end user license agreement that comes with our software.
now im not an expert on the GPL, but i KNOW that this is in DIRECT violation of sections 1 and 3 - please at least read these here.

These people want to be the next micro$oft - and their "great os" is nothing but GPL software written by OTHER CODERS and defaced by them. I hope they fail.

Eits0 06-27-2002 02:21 PM

They will my friend, they will.

It's just sad to think all those peoples buying those cheap computers "To try out Linux" whilst it's not Linux at all.
Even worse it is when ppl buy those comps to install Microshaft on them (which I think to do, btw!).

j/k :p

crashmeister 06-27-2002 02:31 PM

The GPL in that part applies to the source code which has to be distributed and can be changed and redistributed. It also has to be released. Lindows didn't release the source code for some fishy reasons.
