Volume is restored to max everytime sound is played

Hi,

everytime I lounch an application that plays sound it restores the system volume back to the maximum. It happens to me both in GNOME and KDE. I'm using Debian Jessie.

The alsactl command should fix the problem.

You need root privileges to run it, so either use 'sudo alsactl store' or su first, and after entering the root password, 'alsactl store' will store the current state.

Adjust the sound to suite with alsamixer, then run the command.

See the man page for alsactl for more options.

Hmmm, that didn't solve my problem. However now I feel pretty stupid - I found out that the programs I tried that play sound actually change the system volume (rather then the volume in the program internally), so this is really a problem with those programs and not with the system.

One of the programs is VLC. The other is a program I wrote with Qt. Seems like Qt changes the system volume to max. This seems like a Qt bug, so I asked in the Qt forums too.
