volume adjustment being weird

Ive seen a bunch of threads about people not being able to get any sound on their computer, but thats not exactly the problem im having.

Im getting sound ok, but im not able to adjust my volume through software. I can open the mixer window and move the sliders all i want but nothing changes, with the exception of the Bass & Treble sliders which do work for some odd reason. Another weird thing is when i use Amarok to play music the volume slider at the bottom works fine. The volume sliders in XMMS, MPlayer, VLC dont work though.

Pretty weird right?

Just a wild guess on my part: maybe an incompatibility between the volume control software and the linux system in general.

Have you tried checking out the output driver settings in each of these apps, you may be able to specify how the volume slider should behave i.e. in XMMS under the oss plugin you can configure it so that the volume controls Master not PCM.
