VMware clones not seeing the LAN or WAN

Anyone experienced this problem using VMware and Linux? Any help greatly appreciated.

I've got a VM - an Ubuntu LAMP server running fine but when I clone it and boot the clone it only has the lo 127.0.0.1 address, the eth0 doesn't appear in the ifconfig display. I'm not running the original VM when I boot the clone. The clone is also a fully independent clone of the original. Why does it not behave exactly like the original VM?

Thanks in advance.
