Hi there!
I have a question about vmware. I've installed it but have a couple of problems configuring it. I want it to run WinXP Pro which is on my other partition but it suggest to create a virtual disk. Maybe someone can tell me why the heck do I need a virtual disk and how can I get VMware to run WinXP Pro is on my other partition. Thanks! (By the way: it's VMware 3.1.1)
If you want to run it from an existing partition, it's very easy... just choose "run from an existing physical drive" (or something like that, dont remember exactly) and follow instruction (if your vmware is corectly configurated it will be easy). Your Lilo need to be correctly configurated to boot WinXP and OF COURSE you should be able to read/write NTFS.
HOWEVER,since Ntfs writing is very dangerous (it is not ready for now so it can corrupt the partition table... be aware of the risk!!!) I doN't think it's a good idea to run WinXP with VmWare except if it runs on a FAT partition. Btw, WinXP is VERY heavy for a box alone, so you will need a VERY BIG FATTY box to run it trough vmware without bad lag.
I think Dual boot is a better idea if you want to use the damn WinXP
Thanks Half_Elf! I had to use VMware 'cause I needed to acces a couple off files in WinXP and I needed to write down the result in Linux. That's why I needed VMware. And you're right, it does need a VERY BIG FATTY box. I think I won't be using VMware no more. Thanks again!
If you only need to acess WinXP because of his files, it can be a better idea to turn on NTFS support in the kernel, so you will be able to mount and read (and copy to linux ) NTFS partition and data.
