Hi there!

I am wondering if there are some viruses for Linux?

that I know of, there are only Worms, not viruses.

there's a few, but (afaik)you would need to be running as root for them to do damage. a linux mail server is perfectly happy to pass along a win virus, and you won't even know it was there unless you went looking for it. our major threat is the rootkit, which replaces many files on the server with modified versions with the same names, so with just a quick look, everything looks normal, but the attacker would have admin rights over your box.

but like the above site points out...it depends if the worm exploits your systems vulnerabilities, and then it can gain root access by running a special script. So, it's not that nothing can happen if you are not running root...

I'm Paranoid anyways but I feel that anything is possible when it comes to worms or viruses. One concern of mine is that Linux goes more mainstream will there be viruses galore for Linux then? Or is ths all related to closed source software and using backdoors? Oh well maybe one day ther will be no worms or viruses for us to worry about.

FWIW, I have been using RAVLIN8 (www.rav.ro) for my Linux mailservers for about a week. The program is phenomenal. I have it scanning /var/spool/mail and var/spool/mqueue every few seconds (it is VERY fast) and it is WONDERFUL at removing win viruses (virii?) from e-mail before it is delivered. It leaves the message with a little note saying RAV removed the attachments from this e-mail due to (blah blah blah), leaving the original e-mail header, showing who sent the message so your users can fire off a nastygram. It is a little pricey for personal use, but I use it for my co-lo and virtual hosted accounts and the users really appreciate the extra protection.
