Virtual Terminals

Say I have 2 terminals open. One is the command line and the other is X windows. I noticed when I'm in X windows, I can't chvt (or ALT-F2) back into terminal 1 (the command line). Is there any way around this or can you not switch to another terminal while inside X?

ok, i don't fully get the question but here's the overall story of the situation:

when you are in an X session, and you go to another tty (ctrl-alt-F2) , press ctrl-alt-F7 to get back to the x session

so basically, YES, you can go to another terminal after being in X, just do it as you normally would if it was all command-line. To get back to X, do as stated above

and if it's terminal 1 you want to go to, type ctrl-alt-F1 .
