virtual appliances & GPL

Anyone know how licensing works for virtual appliances that are bundled with linux?
My guess is that whatever the license agreement is of the application will prevail, even if the virtual appliance is bundled with Linux...
Is that the case!??

I ask because I was reading about vkernel.. They're a company that sells a virtual appliance made up of their VM ESX monitoring software bundle with SUSE...
