Video streaming problem

My profuse apologies if this thread is in the wrong forum, but I don't know if this is a hardware or software issue.

I have a 1Mb broadband internet connection, my box has an Athlon XP(1.5Ghz) with 256Mb RAM, a SIS onboard graphics chip(32Mb) and onboard sound chip using OSS.

I am running Debian Sarge with an optimized 2.4 kernel. I have the Macromedia Flashplayer plug-in for Firefox working fine. Film DVDs play beautifully using Totem.

Yet last night when I clicked on a link to watch a video of a band I found I was unable to watch it because it kept stopping every few seconds. Firefox was using Flashplayer to stream it. I would like some advice on why this wouldn't stream.
