Video Sound Conflict

Hello there:
I have a problem when watching video files. I am running gentoo, when I had not configured alsa I could watch the video files with no problem, but with no sound. After I installed alsa I get sound when playing video files, but no image I only get a green screen with lines. This also happens when I run SuSe.
Any ideas?
Thanks

If you provide us with some more details about your setup, you might recieve more responses/replies, like what programs your using, etc?
