Video files corrupt over ftp
I'm not sure where this would fit. Hopefully here.

I have a number of DVD's ripped to avi's (mpeg4, with mp3) and these all play fine. However upon transfering some to my new hard drive via ftp (gftp) on my home network some have become corrupted. They appear to black & white with diagonal streaks of red & green through them. Some of the video files just seem to silt diagonally.

there also appears to a bit more noise in the picture of the files that did transfer 'intact'. Is there anyway to to preserve my video files? Some of them are not replacable - wedding / holiday vidoe / DVD rips that don't have the originals anymore.

All video files work fine on the source drive but I want to zero that asap to sell with my old PC

This could be a binary/passive mode problem with ftp. Do you have any other means of transporting the files?
good luck.

can't get smaba working. Just tried via http but thy still came through the same.

It seems to be the same films again & again for what ever reason. I don't know why - they were all ripped with acidrip.

The good news is I'm almost done copying files over & so far only 9 films have been affected - all are movies so I can swallow ripping them again. I think I'll make 2 sets of backups in future - spare HD & DVD

What machines/os's are on your network? We might be able to get them all transfered proper. Not a bad idea to make duplicate backups, it's a common practice of mine, I'm a freak about backups, two copies on separate spare hard drives, one network drive copy, and two cd copies of the really important stuff.

If it turns out only a few films are affected your best bet may be to rerip.
good luck.

all the films are being moved from a firewire drive formatted in Mac os HFS+ linked to my iBook running Mac os X, to Ubuntu Linux with ext3 filesystem. (My first week using ext3 - always used reiserfs in the past.

All the films were ripped on a slackware 9.1 box with reiserfs the ftp'd to the mac for storage.

You could try setting up samba or possibly look into nfs. I'm pretty sure osX comes with samba. There are some good hot to's here.

good luck.
