Unhappy Vi Problem, or X11??

Just upgraded to etch from sarge. My vi setup was changed in term of colors & some behavior (ex: doesn't respond to End key in inert mode, etc.) & I've toyed with trying to use old vim files to get back to where I was. (I'm trying to get by w/o dealing with all the intricacies of the vim files syntax, etc.)

Suspiciously, I also installed the x11-common package during the upgrade just because I had xfree86-common installed previously. Might this be my problem?

At any rate I have so far tried:
1. Putting the old (pre-upgrade) version of vimrc in to /etc/vim;
2. Copying a backup of my old vim63 directory under /usr/share/vim, then change the vimcurrent link to point to it.

None of this seemed to make any diff.

Any vi cognosi out there who can give me a hint?

Thanks,
Ron
