VERY slow modem speed with Linux
 

Hi, I'm new to Linux and having a little bit of trouble.

The system I have installed is Mepis and I'm excited about it except for the fact that the 'baud rate' at which my modem is operating is 9,600.

This is a 56K, V-92, external, 'dial-up' modem which, on Windows, operates at 46,000 - 50,000.

I have tried this using Mepis as a 'live' CD on a Pentium 2 computer with 256MG Ram and also with Mepis installed on the hard drive of an AMD Athlon computer, also with 256MB Ram, both with exactly the same result.

Bearing in mind that I am committed to 'dial-up' for financial reasons, I would appreciate any helpful suggestions as to how I might be able to speed up my access.

I assume you're running kppp when connecting? Have you verified that the kppp-settings are correct?

What is your modem baud rate in KPPP? Try setting it to the max
or 115200.

Here are my KPPP settings under the 'device' tab:-

Modem device = /dev/modem

Flow control = Hardware (CRTSCTS)

Line termination = CR

Connection speed = 460800

These are the default settings

When I read the 'help' section, under 'Modem Device', it seems to indicate that
/dev/ttys0 would be the default.

Under 'Flow Control', I just don't understand the explanation.

Under 'Line Termination' it seems to indicate that the default should be CR/LF

Under 'Connection Speed' it says to use the max. speed, so I guess I've got this one OK.

I hope this gives an adequate explanation of where I am at.

My modem is a Modular Technology (from Frys Electronics) 56K, V-92, external.

Sorry if this is a drag but I am still optimistic about getting it sorted out and really appreciate help.
