Very slow copying on SSD and HDD - slow IO operations
Hello,
I need some help.
I have a problem with my linux which doesn't want to work too fast.
The problem is with hard drive I/O - benchmarking with dd gives me speed of around 5 MB/s. When I copy 13GB from one folder to the another one it takes more than 20-30 minutes.
When I do it on my Windows 7 OS, it takes like 20-30 seconds. The speed on windows is around 400-500 MB/s
I have Samsung 840 EVO SSD and WD Caviar HDD, Slackware distro, kernel 3.12.6, nothing running except copying, I use tmpfs for /tmp, /var/tmp.
Speed of dd if=/dev/zero... on tmpfs shows me around 3.8GB/s
I did even try with different sysctl to tune up my OS.
CPU is not used, it looks like cp operation is using less then 8% of CPU. Maybe this is the cause. If I had data copied with 400MB/s and used 8% of CPU it would be perfect but I get only 5MB/s.
Can you point me out something that I can check and fix it.
What can be causing this slow data transfer.
I did tests on the same machine with linux and windows dual booting.

Maybe this has something to do with slow hard drive operations and difference between hdparm -tT tests and real cp or dd times.
I user Reiserfs (soon I will move to zfs or brtfs) and I noticed that I have laptop mode set to 5 (vm.laptop_mode=5).
I'm trying to disable laptop mode so today I will try to change vm.laptop_mode to 0 and disable all other scripts that try to run laptop mode.

From what I can see from the information you have posted there aren't issues known to me that could cause this behavior, though I have no experiences with REISER4.

Hi,
I have a laptop, on the same SSD I have a Windows 7. In Windows 7 speed is ok but not in linux. I use Slackware and Reiserfs more than 10 years now. Until now I can not complain.
I prefer finding the solution than change to a different file system, etc.
If there is a reason, I can change it but I need to know where is the problem.

Ok, I'll post it when I get back home.
I will even do some tests with F2FS. Maybe some boot options have something to do with my problem:
