very looong shutdown

Hi!. When I shutdown my computer I go to the terminal and do the /sbin/shutdown -h now, or halt. It starts out fine and ok's everything but then it starts going thru this list of stuff and keeps going and going and never stops so I have manually turn off the computer (which I don't like doing because I'm afraid I might mess somehting up) and it looks like its's just looping. How can I either make it stop or have an easier shutdown?

Well, does it appear to cycle through the same things or does it hang on a particular item?

you can start closing the services that you dont use.maybe a service is messing up the things

Yes it is going through the same things. Sorry it took so long.

Where does the recycling start. Maybe a cut'n'paste from /var/log/messages ??
Then maybe you could find that point in /etc/rc.d/rc0.d and see if everything looks O.K.

not sure if this would help... but do you have it trying to connect to something else in your network? I know when I shut down my server and try to boot my workstation it hangs forever because the nfs can't connect.
