Various problems in RH8.

I don't know what happened.
When I want to go to System Tools and run Hardware Browser, Network Device Control or red Hat Network I get an "Unknown Error".

The RHN applet crashes on me all the time so I don't bother reactivating it all the time, instead I lanch it from time to time to see whether there are any updates or not.
I just tried to launch it and it returns a "Segmentation fault"????
I can't acces Server Settings/Services either?

Something has to be corrupted somewhere, but what?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar experience with RHN when I ran it as root. (I don't recall it dumping core or anything. It just went catatonic.) Running it within a non-privileged X session and I had no problems. Occasionally, though, the panel icon narrows down into a vertical sliver about 3-4 pixels wide. Wierd.

From time to time the audio mixer setting gets zeroed out after you log out of Gnome and log back in. Sort of annoying but a minor complaint.

And don't get me started on that Gnome package manager. (I'm wondering whether I can load gnorpm from my 7.1 CDs... :-) )

I've looked at the Red Hat site to see if there are any updates to the RHN package but nothing shows up. Hmm... I do remember having to download an updated rpm program that was posted on an FTP server at Red Hat. (See Bugzilla report 75647 on www.redhat.com for more)

As for the other troubles you're seeing: Have you run rpm to check the system? Try ``rpm -Va'' and check the results to see if anything that's been changed looks like something that shouldn't have been. I.e., you'll see a bunch of files in /etc that are flagged as changed -- like passwd -- but you wouldn't expect to see that in /bin. Worth a try.

Good luck.

Now, from what I understand :
S = size change
M = permissions change
5 = MD5 changed
D = device change
U = user change
G = group change
T = date/time change
missing = file is gone

Yesterday while I was on irc my pc froze completely, I could only move my mouse sporadically and had to do a hard reboot.
Could all this mean I have been rooted?

Update : problem solved!!

All my problems were caused by a corrupted update of pygtk2.
I added a new repository for apt-get yesterday and like almost every day I ran an "Upgrade all".
It upgraded pygtk2 and caused a bunch of problems I didn't notice right away, because it's mainly stuff you don't use every day.

I noticed something was wrong when trying to acces my Hardware Browser and it wouldn't run!
I removed pygtk2
#apt-get remove pygtk2
It uninstalled a ton of files, and when finished I selected them all for install from within Synaptic, but this time from the freshrpms repository and everything is back to normal.

A big thank you again to void main from MES if he happens to read this
Also thank you to rnturn for helping pointing out the problem with rpm -Va.

/me is happy again
