/var/log files

I'm curious.
I'm running suse 7.3 and my /var/log directory has several files such as:
firewall
localmessages
messages

and also several files for each of the above labeled
firewall-########.gz where ## is the date shown for the file.

I'm guessing that the .gz files are periodic backups of the main file as one seems to be created every month.

Do they serve any purpose? can they/should they be deleted to save space????

In /var/log there are your logs. You should browse them from time to time (especially when running a server). All those .gz files are older log files (there're created when the log file's getting too big). If there's nothing interesting inside, you can usualy delete them...
