UW IMAP Subscription Database

First off: THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INFO YOU CAN OFFER THAT HELPS.

I'm having problems using Outlook (or Outlook Express) to "subscribe" to certain mailboxes using UW IMAP.

I've tried numerous scenarios:
1. Different versions of Outlook. Problems with all versions. At this point suspect Outlook flaws.
2. Different mailboxes on same server. 95% of the mailboxes work fine. Which negates Outlook IMAP connectivity theory.
3. KWrite from same server as IMAP. Worked fine which negates bad mailbox file theory.
4. KWrite from different Linux box. Worked fine which negates bad permissions theory.
5. All Mailboxes show up in the list. We just can't "subscribe" to them. That, again, suggests IMAP is connecting and performing most of the work.
6. Exhaustive internet search with nothing which brings me to last gasp here.

My best guess is it has to do with the file locking record keeping in the subscription database. Does UW IMAP maintain an active database on the server or is it just client based? I've read a "client" database is maintained by Outlook. If that's the case, then a specific "record" associated with certain usernames is a trouble spot.

Here is the consistent message when the attempt is made to "subscribe". You'd think that if this problem has turned up twice on one network with 40 users, it would be plastered on the internet.

"SUBSCRIBE failed: Can't subscribe to mailbox home/user1/EMail/Mailbox: no such mailbox
