/usr and /opt in 1 partition

Is it possible to put 2 directories in 1 partition?
My case: I want to put BOTH /usr and /opt ONLY in 1 partition so to make fewer
list in the partition table as I plan to make more than 10 partitions in 2 Disks.
If /usr and /opt have to be separated, that would generate more than 11 partitions.
So, 1 partition less would be tremendously helpful for my future partitioning task.

(This is for experimental and learning experience. Please don't reply:"It's not necessary
to have that many partitions in a pc ! ")

i9t's possible, sure, just move /opt/ to somethign like /usr/opt and create a symlin kback to /opt on the root partition. then it'll appear in two places.

OK..what i get is your solution is to create /opt as symlink for /usr/opt

Sorry, that's kinda hack solution i think. But is there any other way to make it /usr and /opt really separated but in the same partition? If not I will use your solution although i dunno how to create symlink in the middle linux installation. That will be in another thread after i finished the partitioning stuff

Not not really, two different directories can't mount to the same drive partition, just isn't feasible unless one is under the other, subdirectory, etc. The link is the proper way to achieve such tasks.

Not sure I understand all this. You can put any directory in any partition you want. A common default is two partitions---one for swap, and one for everything else. I often set up with four: Swap, Boot, Data, and Root (which holds everything below root that was not put somewhere else).

You could just leave /opt alone so it stays on the / partition. It's not like it'll disappear if you don't assign it a partition.
