Using xorg.conf file and I Get No Desktop

Hi,

I need to use /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Using Xubuntu 13.10 and there is by default no xorg.conf file, I think Ubuntu has not used this file for a long time if ever. But I need to have it, there's no other fix for my video to work properly.

But now when I boot I get no desktop just a mouse cursor.

I have it set that I can restart X with cntrl-alt-backspace, so I do that and then I get a user login (from lightDM I think). From that point I login and I get a perfectly OK desktop and everything works great.

But I want to have autologin - to just to start X and get my desktop. There are other users and I don't want to give them my sudo capable password.

So there's an xorg.conf file being used and Xununtu is not autologging into the desktop - any help apprecaited.

Thanks

did i get this correctly, you have a xorg.conf now, which is being parsed (according to Xorg.0.log), so your hardware settings work now, but something else broke?

- what wasn't working before you created the xorg.conf? what are you hoping to achieve with the xorg.conf? did you succeed?
- why is the xorg.conf the only way to achieve what you want?
- post the xorg.conf?
- what is not working now, or worse than before? if you have a mouse cursor, it seems you still have an xsession there. tried clicking the desktop, common hotkeys...?

i think the log file you posted is from the second login attempt, the one that succeeded.
useful error/warning message are in one of the other /var/log/Xorg.*.log files (i can never remember which one is the one from the previous xsession).
so either, reproduce the error and post Xorg.0.log before restarting X, or post the log file from the previous Xsession.
