Using mail filters with Exchange 2003 ?

I was just wondering if it was possible to integrate some sort of virus protection / spam filtering on my debian box with a seperate Exchange 2003 Server ( Small Business Server 2003) . I have been trying to get mimedefang and Spam Assasin working but for some reason cant get them to install properly?? Debian is not on the list of "successfully installed o's" so I am just about to blow it away and put Red Hat 9.0 (However a friend runs it on his debian box).

But it seems that a lot of these filters require sendmail or something similar. I do not really want to install sendmail as I would like to only have 1 mail server on my network! Are there any programs which scan and then pass the mail on to another ip?

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.
