Using Linux to earn money today
 

What are my options if I want to use Linux to earn money online either with or without an investment from my part?

- I want to earn money from home remotely
- I have very good Linux skills
- An example would be renting a dedicated server for services (but I want something guaranteed income)

So far what I found myself on the internet isn't much. Just wondering if someone can help.

Freelance coding you mean C language or bash scripts? And where would I get started?

There are tons of people who could use a reliable server. First you'd have to have some disaster plan like fire flood and what not, to include backups.

Next you'd have to work on a business plan that covers the costs.

Then market services from web hosting to remote applications to storage of files.

Consider also that you may need to travel to small offices to maintain software.

Burn and sell Linux CDs

On a website ? Is there even a market for that for profit?

I use Linux as a tool to supplement what I love to do to earn my money.
It is kinda covered in my profile.

Ebay to buy parts and tools.
The web for work research and software purchases for my line of work.
There is more money in what I do than most people realize.

Sometimes it is feast. Sometimes famine. Always fun.

But probably not what you are looking for.:doh:

But maybe you might realize instead of linux being a end to a means. It can be a road to a means instead.
Support at a library or community college. Working with the guy that owns a local electronics repair shop.

The first and immediate method would be to buy into some one else's plan for making money online, "guaranteed"... (see "banker" and "trap" below).

A better place to start would probably be to ask yourself, "What knowledge, skills and interests do I have that I could turn into profit for myself, and how could my Linux skills fit into that?".

The only source of wealth is the product of human labor, which is why the banker** creates money from thin air to "loan" to you, but you must labor to "repay" it, thereby converting your labor for the banker's use, so they do not have to labor...

So start by realizing that you hold all the cards, your knowledge and labor, just focus on what you can do that is of value to someone else - then polish those skills so that you do them well, and make them available. In that context Linux is at least a communication, marekting, scheduling and data recording tool. If you think a nice website would help make your presence known, then Linux provides the tools to do that as well. If doing local work then use the design tools available in Linux to create a simple, single page "brochure" that you can create in small quantities for very low cost at the local office supply store (i.e. copy machine) - then pass them around.

As far as your desire for something with guaranteed income today... adjust your expectations and don't let them lead you into someone else's plan, or trap...

** "banker" as used here is anyone willing to amass great wealth from the labor of others, out of proportion to any labor or product they must contribute themselves, which is preferrably none. Synonym for "thief" and "slaver" in sane societies.

No source of income is guaranteed.

The only way to "earn money," legitimately at least, is either to do something or to sell something that someone else is willing to pay money for.

And to do that, so well and so consistently, that many other people freely and gladly speak well of you or it.

You can do that, or not, "with or without Linux."

As some have said, you don't need Linux skills as such, to make a living out of using Linux.

Get a job that allows you to use Linux - there are many. There tend to be a lot of Web developer roles around and you often do not need a specific OS. A lot of languages are agnostic and in many ways (and from personal experience), Linux is so well set up for Web development because so many Web servers use it. Perhaps avoid .Net jobs, although I know a lot of people that use Macs and Linux and just fire up a VM to do their work - personally I don't like that because you are still having to use Windows (although it is better not being the host).

My company has a big Linux product, but many .Net based products, but it is all cloud, so easy to use Linux to get the job done and most software has native versions (outside of Web based). I guess if I moved into the Linux product team then I would be purely working in Linux, but I have not loaded up Windows for over 5 years in any case.

Having done this in the past - if you create a good website template with CMS (content management system) to add/edit content, you will find that you can then sell full website solutions and the profits go up after the first project. I used to do this and it pretty much went from breaking even to 90% profit on every project. I only stopped because it got a little boring churning out the same websites many times. I guess looking back, it would be ideal for today - lots of free time!

Freelancing may be the simplest way to make sure you start on Linux because you will use your own system. Otherwise, you need to find a company who does not mind you using it (most companies only provide Windows or Mac machines - mine included).

So it is - darn that latest post malarkey. It would be interesting to know how the OP feels a number of years later. At least the recent posts might be useful for someone.
