using init3 or init4

when i try to use init3 or init4 it asks me for my login i give it then when i hit enter i get a lot lines that look something like this

i mean to say i am trying to use the non gui tty2 tty3 i'm not sure if thats the same as init3. i am new at this

If you want the system run run in non-GUI mode, use one of

init 3

OR

telinit 3

You will get various msgs as it switches runlevel. It has to stop/start various services.

when i am in init 3 i get a bunch of code and i can't do anything
see attached picture to see what i mean.

when i ran telinit 3
i got a blank screen and had to reboot

can i fix this
