Using icons for shortcuts???

hey, i have some icons on my linux, and i want to make my shortcuts on the desktop to use them.
how can i do this?

which desktop environment are you using?

In KDE, right click on the desktop and select 'new'
from there you can make a link to darn near anything.

Right click on the icon - go to properties - click on the icon then select the one you want.
