Question Using home computer for email?

Is it possible to set my home computer up to send and recieve email. My computer has no specific name .( just the typical localhost@localdomain crap , I really don't know if that matters of not though ). I seem to recall installing pine once and being able to send an email to my cable internet provider account but not being able to reply. Is it possible to set this up to be able to use it as my main email client? All help is appreciated, if more info is needed, I can provide.

Thanks,

JMC

You need a fixed address to receive mails. Or ask your isp if he offers alternative services.
( something pop and sendmail server )

Ok, and to make things easier on people sending you email, you can get a free ip server name, I bet there are tons if you have a static IP, mine is Dynamic, the people I go through are www.no-ip.com but there are plenty of others, I think www.dynu.org ? maybe .com That's one as well. They are free, and the email address will be something like:
JMC@JMC.no-ip.org or something like that. Next, you will need to setup (I think) a pop3 server, see www.qualcomm.com for that. That is about as far as I could get, but if you read around in the networking forum in this site, and have a good idea about networking, you should be able to pick it up from there no problem.

there are two ways for doing this:

1) easier way: use some email address you can obtain on the internet for free and utilize their pop3 (or imap) and smtp server for sending and receiving email through their server.

2) install a mail server of you own which is a more difficult task for beginning.

---------------------------------------------------------

then you need software on your computer to handle receiving, sending and writing email. (sendmail, fetchmail, procmail, mutt)

their are also software like kmail etc. that have built in capability of the mentioned programs and are thus easier to configure.

This assumes that all you want is an e-mail client on your PC. If you have an existing e-mail address through your ISP, then all you need is a client like kmail in KDE or the equivalent in Gnome or a half-dozen other CLI clients.

Just do an inquiry on "email client" in Google for more info.
