Diff is not a list comparison tool. You can co-opt it for this task by pre-sorting the two input files, but no - there is not a way to make diff to all this in one command.

This is why it's good to have shell scripts... you can write something to sort the two inputs and then use diff to see if there is a difference.

What output would you expect if one file contained an extra line? (show the expected output for the extra line in both the first file, and another example where the extra line is in the second file).

so basically the of the pipe, grep, sed, awk and others should be able to finish the job! This was an exellent learning experience and I am thankful.
