using a laptop as a server

I've got a spare desktop machine in the house, but its just too big to hide somewhere.

I've also got a spare IBM T22 laptop as well, I'm just wondering, how long would the laptop last being used as a server for personal use at home? The laptop is very small and easy to hide away somewhere, maybe even on a pull out draw in a cuboard with a router and wireless access point.

I know laptops are not built to be switched on 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so I'm posing the question on here, will it simply die after a couple off weeks?

The laptop will be idle 98% of the time, so it's not like the processor is going to get hammered and get extrememly hot.

Anyone using a laptop as a server.

I would be worried about overheating, all the hardware in laptops is tightly packed and the fans aren't as effective as those in a 'real' case. Also if your planning to put it in a cuboard you are restricting air circulation further.

I'm not familiar with your particular make/model but I have a DELL Inspiron which seems to run very hot and some form of Toshiba (PII 266 I think) which runs hotter than I would like

I do agree with phil.d.g with his words.
Laptops are meant for mobile purposes. So anyhow i donot support this suggestion or query.
More so if you want something smaller in size for a server than you could get that in desktop too.

I've got a spare desktop machine, I just cant seem to find a case small enough to put the equipment into, especially for a low cost.
