userdel: unable to lock password file

that's the message i get when i try to delete a user...
but i can successfully manually lock and unlock the password file with passwd...
so i'm not sure what's going on... googleing has lead me to believe that some process did not terminate properly, and thus i should just manually delete the user from passwd, and then delete all of his various files... but i just wanted to get some input before i do that...
thanks
