User permission issues

Hey all,
I've disabled ssh login for root as a security precaution, i now login to the server with another user, and when i need to do something which requires more permissions i do su, and do it as root, i also do sudo.

However even if i do an su as root, sometimes when i try to do something like stopping or restarting a service it tells me permission denied, is there a way to give my user root privileges? or something similar?

thanks. i also have foo ALL=(ALL) ALL under /etc/sudoers.

Did you remember to use the '-' option to get the login environment? For example,

su -

or

su - root

If you just use 'su', you keep your existing login environment, which is not what you usually want.

yes, i do su root. sorry i didn't specify it.
