User not logging on to GNOME or KDE on SUSE 10.1
Hi I have SUSE 10.1 and basically one of my users can't log on. When I select a KDE session (using kdm here btw) it waits for like 10 mins and then spits out something about dcopserver, when I select gnome it just displays the background image for a while and then restarts X when I have XGL enabled I try to log on and after a few seconds the screen goes blank and vertical multicoloured lines appear starting about halfway up and going to the bottom of the screen. When I use Openbox (without XGL) it works fine, it also works fine for other users, on the day that this happened I had just installed libmtp to get my MP3er working, and updated XGL.
Thanks for any help |
I can't comment on XGL or libmtp, but the other two things may be permission
issues; check whether the user owns ALL files in his home, and whether all files in /tmp that have his username in their name are owned by him, too, and that /tmp is 1777 Cheers, Tink |
OK, don't have time now but I will try that tomorrow

I have not done this as it seems that if the computer is rebooted, this happens with every new user that was created in the previous session - eg. I created the user joe when this happened with the username tiddy, now I have rebooted and the same thing happens with joe as with tiddy.
Also, this only happens with KDE and gnome, I am using openbox atm. Here is contents of /home/joe/.xsession-errors if it will help: Code:
/etc/X11/xim: Checking wether an input method should be started. |
You don't need to boot the computer to check permissions?

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean
|
Hello? Is anybody going to reply to this post or do I have to figure it out myself?
|
Did you check the permissions as I stated above?
|
Sorry, I can't believe I've been this dumb. I have no idea why but /home/tiddy has user joe! Very sorry for wasting everyones time.
|
Don't you wish you had checked permissions on the 22nd? :}
