User authentication

Is it possible to authenticate users to a Redhat domain controller, something similar to what Windows does? I'm looking to create some kind of linux domain controller where I can add or delete users without having to go to each machine. Thanks.

NIS or LDAP might work in this case, etc.

NIS will definately work, but is not a secure technology at all. LDAP would be the way to go, although the learning curve is pretty brutal.

If I've already got a Win2k domain configured, is it possible to join these RH boxes with this domain? The idea is to have a mixed environment (Linux and Windows) on the same domain. Thanks.

If you are trying to share directories etc then samba is the way to go.

You can connect linux to windoze, and vice versa with that. I am sure you probably already know what samba is. Samba can be set up to have the authentication done on the unix side or on the windows side.

At this time, I'm not looking to share directories or printers, but I suppose that might be something of interest in the future. I want a mixed Windows/Linux environment and I want to be able to manager accounts and things like that from one system. Currently I have a Win2k SVR box configured as a domain controller and have no problems authenticating with Windows clients, but I want to also be able to authenticate with linux users too. From what I've read so far, I don't think Samba supports that.

Yes I believe it is possible to join a Linux machine to a Windows domain by using Samba. Check out this site: http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/help/samba/DOMAIN_MEMBER.html

I actually plan on implementing that myself, let me know how it goes.

But also if you want to have a central Linux server that Linux clients authenticate through, then NIS is the way to go.
