User account takes forever to accept password
 

I have to wait more than 5 minutes to log into my system as a regular user after I enter the password. My Root account comes back immediately after entering the password. If I log into a second virtual terminal as the same regular user, the prompt returns immediately like it should. It is only the first time after a reboot that this occurs.

I have tried using the force switch with the logrotate command but it does not help this problem.

I am running Mandrake 10.1 and have no other problems with the system. Is there a good source of information on how to maintain logfiles and what could cause this problem?

What if you drop to vt2 or vt3 straight after reboot and try logging in? Have you added in any of your own boot scripts? Does this just happen for the one particular user - i.e if root logs straight in after reboot, does it take 5 minutes? Try adding a new user with "useradd test" then assign a password with "passwd test", reboot, and see if you get the same problem when logging straight in with this test user.

Thanks for replying! It doesn't matter which vt I use to log in as a non-root user. I generally use vt1 for Root access, vt2 and vt3 are for xwindows and command line work. I have tried all virtual terminals and always get the slow login when my user account tries to log in after a reboot. Come to think of it, if I completely log out of all terminals, I will get this delay the first time the user account tries to log on. A re-boot is not required for this to happen, just the first occurence of the regular user account. Root always gets in quickly at any time on any vt.

I haven't added anything to the boot up scripts for a long time. This gradually became a problem, getting slower and slower over a period of weeks. I only have 2 accounts on this machine; Root, and my regular account. Therefore, I will try adding the test user as you suggested and see what happens.

Only one other anomaly has occured. My Pioneer DVD burner has been gradually failing. It will still burn CDs, but errors out trying to burn DVDs. It will read a DVD however. I can't think why this would matter, but it is the only thing different going on with a very reliable and stable machine.
